Abstract

This research is about the problems of the use of English in teaching English in Sekolah Bertaraf Internasional (SBI) Kindergarten Gemolong. This research describes the English teaching implementation and problems of this implementation (the teaching and learning process). This is a descriptive qualitative research, so it doesn’t include any calculation or numerating. The methods of collecting data are interview, observation, and documents. Based on the data analysis, the description of English teaching implementation covers four sections: the purpose of the use of English; English teaching activities; the teacher’s role, and the teaching materials. There are two purposes of the use of English: to fulfil enquires of SBI established system that use English as a medium of teaching; and to introduce English to the young learners. The teachers use some techniques of teaching English, such as speak English as much of the time as the teachers can; using pictures and teaching simple phrases or sentences to the students. Teachers take some roles: as a parent; as a controller; as an organizer; as an assessor, and as a resource. The teaching materials are workbooks, references from expert, searching in internet and also from the parent aide that combined into an appropriate student’s worksheets. There are four problems that faced in teaching English using English. They are: the lack of student’s capabilities; the difficulties in managing the classroom; the students are unlikely to feel that they need to use English because English is not used as a means of social communication and the lack of supports from the environment; and the interference of the first language (student’s mother tongue).
