Abstract
This study is aimed at judging whether the speaking materials in the textbook entitled “English on Sky” used for the first year students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 of Surakarta are compatible with the speaking materials in the 2004 English curriculum or not. The data are speaking materials in the textbook and the 2004 English curriculum mentioned. The data were collected by documenting speaking materials in the textbook, and analyzed by matching speaking materials in the textbook with speaking materials in the 2004 English curriculum. The result of data analysis shows that the textbook entitled "English on Sky" is suitable with the 2004 English curriculum. The quality of speaking materials in the textbook is good, because the score of schema of qualification of the speaking materials is 75%. Among the 8 themes in the textbook there is only 1 theme that is completely present the speaking materials with the four speaking elements. The 7 themes presented the speaking materials, but one of the speaking element is not presented the speaking materials in the textbook that is phonology which is the most important element in speaking.
