Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation and the result of KWL strategy and games in teaching speaking at the seventh year SMPN2 Banyudono, to know the improvement of student’s speaking skill and to clarify the student’s responses to the implementation this strategy. The writer applies action research as the type of research. The data of this research are the field note, the interview script, the lesson plan, and the score of pretest and post-test. She uses observation, interview, documentation and test for collecting the data. The technique of analyzing data are reducing, displaying, and verifying the data. The result of the research shows that, (1) the action of the implementation of teaching speaking by using KWL strategy and games at then seventh year of SMPN2 Banyudono was conducted in three cycles and there was an improvement of student’s speaking ability in each cycle. (2) Teaching speaking by using KWL strategy that is combined with games at the seventh year of SMPN2 Banyudono is effective. It is indicated by the improvement of student’s speaking aspect in each cycle and the improvement of the score average of student’s speaking ability after the researcher gave the treatment. (3) The student’s response after being taught by using KWL strategy and games is good. It is indicated by the enthusiasm of the students in speaking activities. The students were motivated and they became more confident and active to speak.
