Abstract

The objectives of this research are to describe the type of loss and gain in translation and the influence of loss and gain to the accuracy of translation in cosmetic label of Mustika Ratu’s products. The research uses descriptive qualitative method which uses methods of seeking, collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data, then drawing conclusion. The data are the sentences in cosmetic label of Mustika Ratu’s products. There are 18 products as the data source and 80 sentences as the data. The result of the research shows that (1) from 80 data there were 20 data or 25, 3 % employing loss in translation. There were four types of loss, namely loss in phrase units (11 or 55 %), loss in clause units (4 or 20 %), loss in word (2 or 10 %), and loss in sentence units (3 or 15 %). Meanwhile, from 80 data there were 8 data or 10 % employing gain in translation. There are 3 types of gain, namely: gain in phrase units (4 or 50 %), gain in clause units (3 or 37, 5 %), and gain in sentence units (1 or 12, 5 %). (2) The employing of loss in translation make the translation result belongs to inaccurate. On the other hand, the influence of gain in translation can be divided into two, they are: accurate (2 data or 25%) and inaccurate (6 data or 75 %)
