Abstract

The purpose of this research is to describe the forms and the type of code mixing in teaching learning process of speaking in English Department of UMS 2007/2008. Beside, it is an aimed to describe the reason of using the code mixing. Concerning with the objective of the study, the researcher use the qualitative method. The data are taken from teaching learning process of speaking in English Department of UMS 2007/2008 done by students and lecturers. The researcher found the data by recording, listed them, and classified them into form of code mixing. The researcher used the linguistics elements, sociolinguistics theory, and Ohoiwutun’s theoryto identify the data. Based on the data analysis, there are some findings of code mixing. There are two forms of code mixing: word and phrase. Word is divided into two, single and compound word. And there are two types of code mixing, that is inner code mixing and outer code mixing. Moreover there are two reasons of using the codes: Need filling motive and prestige filling motive.
