Abstract

This research paper is aimed to describe the teaching-learning process of business English at SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta, the problems faced by the students in teaching-learning process of business English, and how the teacher solution in overcoming the problems. The writer uses descriptive qualitative research. The data in this research are derived from event, informant, and document analysis. The data are collected from the observation and interview with teacher and students. The result of the research shows that (1) the objective of teaching-learning business English is to improve English proficiency of secretary students. The material given is suitable with syllabus made by the teacher of business English at SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta, the techniques used by the teacher in delivering the materials are drilling, presentation, role-playing which are involved in teaching-learning methods namely direct method, communicative language teaching, and grammar translation methods. To measure the student’s ability, the teacher conducts test. The type of the test is written test and oral test. (2) The student’s problems in teaching-learning business English are student’s ability, lack of vocabulary, feeling shy or scare to presentation, and limited exposure of business English. (3) The ways done by teacher to overcome the problems are encourage the students to practice to speak, give advice and motivation, make the situation of the class feel relaxed and comfortable, and used real and simple media when teaching the business English materials.
