Abstract

English jargon is included in language style used only by a group of people with similar interest or profession and knowledge. This research studies about the English jargon used in ‘KOMPUTER AKTIF’ Magazine using Sociolinguistic Approach. The objectives of study are to describe the Morphological Forms of English jargon and to reveal the lexical and contextual meaning of each jargon used in ‘KOMPUTER AKTIF’ Magazine. In collecting the data, the writer uses documentation method that investigates the written jargons from the magazine. The research analyzes the Morphological Forms of English jargon through the Morphological process or Word Formation and reveals the change of meaning based on the theory proposed by Poedjosoedarmo. The result of the study shows that: (1) The Morphological Form of English Jargon used in ‘KOMPUTER AKTIF’ Magazine are 50 % in the form of Acronym, 23,3 % in the form of Back-Formation, and 26,7 % in the form of Compounding. (2) Dealing with lexical and contextual meaning the writer found that 13,3 % of the English jargon belong to the category the Real Meaning is broader than New Meaning, 16,7 % of the English jargon belong to the New Meaning could be broader than its Real Meaning, 3,3 % of the English jargon belong to the Real Meaning and the New Meaning can share same features of meaning, 3,3 % of the English jargon belong to the Real Meaning and the New Meaning could be identical to each other but used in different field, 10 % of the English jargon belong to the Real Meaning and the New Meaning could be quite different, 53,3 % of the English jargon belong to the New Meaning does not have the Real Meaning.
