Abstract

This research discusses the compliment response on movie manuscripts. The objectives of the research are to clarify the forms of compliment, the intention of compliment and the types of compliment response. This research is qualitative research. The data are sentences taken from printed material used in movie manuscript. The sources of data are movie manuscripts entitled Pretty Woman and 10 Things I Hate About You. The writer uses document method to collect the data. To clarify the form, the writer refers to linguistic form theory especially sentence pattern; in clarifying the intention of compliment the writer employs speech acts theory. The writer applies Herbert’s classification to analyze the types of compliment responses. Having analyzed the data, the writer founds that the forms of sentence are declarative sentence, imperative sentence and exclamatory sentence. Related to the intention, the writer gets six kinds of intentions, namely, to insult, to tease, to praise, to inform, to thank, and to motivate. The types of compliment response are appreciation token, comment acceptance-single, praise upgrade, comment history, return, question, disagreement, and no acknowledgment.
