Abstract

This research paper is intended 1) to analyze the teacher-students’ interaction in English-speaking class, at the tenth year students of SMA Negeri 1 Mojolaban, especially class X-5. Teacher-students interaction is focused on the classification of language function in the speaking classroom interaction and the method of speaking interaction and 2) to describe the problems faced by the teacher and student in their interaction. The researcher uses qualitative method in collecting the data. This study uses observation, interview, and document analysis. The technique of analyzing the data is interactive-analysis model. The result of the study shows that teacher-student interaction in English-speaking class X-5 of SMA Negeri 1 Mojolaban is dominated by the teacher. The language functions used in their interaction are greeting, explaining, asking and answering question, giving direction, praising and encouraging. The method of speaking classroom interaction is Brown Interaction Analysis System (BIAS). There are some problems faced by the teacher, namely; the students do not want to take a risk, the students are less open-minded, the students do not have high motivation to learn and limited instructional media. The problems faced by the students are students’ limited vocabulary, students’ grammar mastery, limited opportunity to speak up in the lesson and monotonous teacher technique.
