Abstract

The objectives of the study is to identify the problems faced by the third year students in mastering vocabulary and to describe the solution made by the teacher to overcome the third year students’ problem. The data are the narrative of the process of teaching and learning vocabulary in the third year students of MDI AL Mustaqbal Magetan. In this research, the writer did a classroom observation and interview to the English teacher and the students. For analyzing the data, the writer used Interactive Analysis Model Proposed by M.B Miles and Huberman. The analysis consists of four steps, namely (1) Collecting data; (2) Reducing data; (3) displaying data; (4)Drawing conclusion. Based on the data analysis, the writer finds the problem faced by the third year of MDI AL Mustaqbal in mastering vocabulary and the solution made by the teacher to overcome students’ problem as following: (1) In translation, when there is someone asking the meaning, she often translates the difficult words herself directly without suggesting to looking at dictionary first. (2) In pronunciation, she pronounces the difficult word first, then followed by all students together and the teacher corrects the mistake and repeat the word again. (3) In writing, the teacher gives solution such as giving picture as the object. So, the students are asked to go in front of the class one by one and write in the blackboard. And then the teacher corrects the writing grammatical ruler and expressing words in pronunciation. (4) In differentiating kinds of words, the teacher always tries to refresh the students’ memories by testing or asking kinds of words. There are some teaching media that can be used by the teacher to teach vocabulary, namely using objects, drawings or flashcards, illustrations and pictures, mimes, gestures, games, and storytelling.
