Abstract

The research aims at knowing (1) whether there is significant difference in writing ability between the result of teaching writing a descriptive paragraph by using picture and by using conventional technique, and (2)whether teaching writing a descriptive paragraph by using picture is better than teaching writing a descriptive paragraph by using conventional technique. The type of research is quantitative method, pre-test and post-test design. The subject of this study is limited on the second grade students of SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta. For collecting the data, the writer uses the test. The test used is subjective test. From the result of the test, the writer obtains the data to be analyzed. Then, the data are analyzed by using t-test. The result of this research shows that: there is a significant difference in writing ability between the result of teaching writing a descriptive paragraph by using picture and by using conventional technique. The result of the computation of t-test shows that t-observation (8.5) is higher than t-table for N=31 at 5% significant degree(0.355). Because t-observation is higher than t-table, Ho is rejected. Therefore, the students taught using picture get higher achievements than those taught using conventional technique, it can be seen in pre test there is no students who get score 4 while in post test, there is 18.75% students who get score 4.
