Abstract

This research is aimed at knowing whether or not the students have adequate reading skill in learning English, to know the students participation during English teaching learning process using top-down method to increase students ability in reading skill, and to describe the achievement of the students reading skill in their test result. The result of this study hopefully will give contribution in learning English. In this research, top-down method is used to improve students in learning reading. This research was carried out at SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta especially in class A that consists of 40 students. In collecting the required data, the writer did observation, gave test, and used int erview. There were two cycles in this action research. Each cycle used pre-test and post-test. The results of pretest and post-test were used to know the score of the reading skill. The mean score of pre-test were 57.50 that belong to low score. While, the mean score of the students reading skill did the action were 80.25. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the result of the student’s achievement showed that top-down method in teaching reading could improve the student’s achievement better. The students score was getting better in each cycle. It indicated that the teaching learning process was successful. Therefore, it is better for the students to study English carefully through practice and experience, and to be active and creative in learning English. While the English teacher should teach the students with top-down method, process considerable knowledge to manage an interesting classroom, and prepare the lessons they are going to teach as well as possible.
