Abstract

The study aims at finding the motivations of the major character, Emma Rouault to commit love affair in Gustavo Flaubert’s Madam Bovary. The object of the research is the novel entitled Madam Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert. The researcher uses psychoanalytic approach focusing on Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The study belongs to a qualitative study in which the writer uses two data sources. The primary data source is the novel Madam Bovary itself, meanwhile the secondary one is any literature such as; book, journal, internet that is related to the study. From the result of analysis, it can be drawn some conclusion, firstly, the structural elements of the novel present in a good unity. It consists of exposition, complication, climax, and resolution, theme, character and characterization, style, setting, and point of view. Secondly, this novel depicts about a married woman who has committed love affair because of her dissatisfaction to her marital life. Having affair is also a symbol of infidelity and betrayal both of trust and integrity.
