Abstract

This research paper is aimed: (1) to find out and to describe the elements and the types of cohesion in the texts of ‘ Your Letter ‘ column in the Jakarta post; (2) to identify the elements of texts of ‘Your Letter’ column in the Jakarta post which configuration the discourse. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The data are the form of word, clause, and sentences taken from the texts. The sources of data are texts of ‘Your Letter’ column in the Jakarta post edition, 1-5, May 2007. The findings show that there are cohesive elements consisting of 3 types of cohesive elements namely: 9 cohesive elements of reference it consisting there are 4 types of personal reference and 5 types of demonstrative reference. The writer also found 3 types of adversative conjunctions and 8 types of repetition of lexical cohesion. Based on the data interpretation, reference dominant in the data. The writer also found four elements texts of ‘Your Letter’ column; there are: heading, inside address, body of letter and the complementary clause. Based on the conclusion above not all the cohesive elements can be found in the data as the use of cohesive elements in the texts of ‘Your Letter ‘column in the Jakarta post.
