Abstract

The major problem of this study is to elucidate the anxiety of Chuck Noland reflected in Robert Zemeckis’ The Cast Away. The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the movie and to analyze the character of Chuck Noland based on psychoanalytic perspectives developed by Sigmund Freud. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the script of The Cast Away movie itself. While secondary data are reviews of the movie those are collected from various sources and other data which deal with the research. In analyzing the data, he applies two approaches. Firstly, structural analysis approach is used to analyze the elements of the movie. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, theme, intent or message, cast, mise-en-scene, cinematography, film editing, and sound. Secondly, the psychoanalytic approach is used for analyzing the anxiety of Chuck Noland that influences his personality, social life, and behavior toward life. These approaches are applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and answer the problems. The writer finds that Chuck Noland as individual who tends to follow his id at the first time. He considers fulfilling his wants by developing him self as high capacity as he can, to live on his own in the remote island then he tries to go out from that island to go back to his civilization to meet his affection Keally Frears. His id that wants to be satisfied immediately prevented his ego that make him realizes that it is impossible to live happily under the reality that he faces when he has gone back to the society. His superego as his moral awareness has led him to survive for the reality that he wishes for. The situation changes his personality; his anxieties have influenced his behavior and the life decisions that he takes.
