Abstract

The major problem of this study is to elucidate the depression of Ruby Chadwick reflected in Anna King’s Ruby Chadwick. The objectives of the study are; to analyse the structural elements of the novel and to analyse the character of Ruby Chadwick based on psychoanalytic perspective. In conducting this study, the researcher uses qualitative research in which the data are based on primary data, the novel Anna King’s Ruby Chadwick itself. While secondary data are Anna King’s biography and other data which deal with the research. In analysing the data, he applies two approaches. Firstly, structural approach is used to analyse the elements of the novel. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style and theme. Secondly, the psychoanalytic approach is used for analysing the depression of Ruby Chadwick that influences her daily activity and behaviour toward life. These approaches are applied in order to get the appropriate analysis and answer the problems. The writer finds that Ruby’s depression leads her to an autonomous personality that has a great self confident in life when she has broken her problem of life.
