Abstract

The major problem of this study is how the major character overcomes his anxiety, resulted from unhandled problems he encounters. The aim of this study is to identify the relationship between causes of anxiety and the way to cope with anxiety being faced by the major character, by means of structural and psychoanalytic analysis. The object of this study is Dave Pelzer’s The Lost Boy and it is focused on the main character, namely David James Pelzer. In conducting this study, the writer uses qualitative research whose data are based on primary sources, Dave Pelzer’s The Lost Boy, and secondary sources, such as Dave Pelzer’s biography, and the other data related to the research. In analyzing the data, he employs and applies two approaches. Structural analysis approach is used to analyze the elements of the novel, namely character and characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, and theme. The psychoanalytic approach is used to analyze the mental condition of main character. This study employs Sigmund Freud psychoanalysis to answer the problem. The outcome of the study shows that the major character encounters the conflict of his mental condition. Then it develops to be his anxiety that is influencing him to do some ways to deal with from his anxiety. He often uses kind of defense mechanism in form of rationalization, for giving reason to support his decision.
