Abstract

This research paper studies 1) types of error, 2) sources of error, 3) student’s mastery tenses. The objectives of the study are 1) to describe types of error, 2) to describe sources of error, 3) to describe the student’s mastery in using tenses. The writer applies descriptive qualitative method as type of research. For collecting data, the writer uses the test. The test is in the form of multiple choice consists 30 items. The result of this research shows that 1) misformation(73%) as dominant type of error, 2) overgeneralization (58%) as dominant source of error. 3) in student’s mastery tenses, the writer found out that the students are able to answer 61.34 % (good) out of the total answers. The computation shows that the percentage of correct answers of simple present tense is 58.99 % (fair). The percentage of correct answers of present continuous tense is 55.90 % (fair). The percentage of correct answers of present prefect tense is 64.88 % (good). The percentage of correct answers of simple past tense is 65.56 % (good). The percentage of correct answers of past continuous tense is 68.85 % (good). The percentage of past prefect tense is 60.31 % (good). The most difficult type of tenses face by the students is present continuous tense 55.90 %.
