Abstract

Our daily life aspects are full of signs including icon, index, and symbol. The objectives of this research are to describe the relation between the myths and the index used and the meaning of the index used to represent the title. The data are the cover of Islamic CDs which are taken from the internet. In collecting the data, the writer applied the documentation and observation. The theories used are the Barthes’ theory and Saussure theory. Barthes emphasized his theory on the myth that derived from the denotative and connotative levels. Then, Saussure emphasized his theory in analyzing sign using the signifier and signified criteria. The type of the research is qualitative interpretative type. The several steps are done to analyze the data. In analyzing the relation between the myths and the index used in the CD’s cover, the steps are: analyzing the denotation level, analyzing the connotation level, and analyzing the myth. In analyzing meaning, the steps are: analyzing signifier and analyzing the signified. This research shows the relation between the myths and the index used and the meaning of the index used to represent the title of the CD’s cover. The relation between the index and the myth are: The indexes are used based on its function on daily life, some of them are based on the authentic hadeeth that told by the prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him). Moreover, some of the indexes are used based on the context in what occasion the CD is made, and general assumption that exist in the society and derived from the linguistic point of view. The meanings are: referring to Islamic literature and referring to the myths that exist in society.
