Abstract

The objective of the research is to describe whether the contextual teaching and learning model can improve the students’ competence in reading of VIIIth grade students of SMP N 1 Karangdowo Klaten. Type of the study is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The process undertaken in this Classroom Action Research follows the model of Kemmis and Taggart using three cycles. The subject of the study in the research are VIIIth grade students of SMP N 1 Karangdowo Klaten. The object of the study is contextual teaching and learning model to improve students’ competence in reading of VIIIth grade students of SMP N 1 Karangdowo Klaten. The data employed in the CAR are test and non test results. The test results are gained from post tests on each stage, whereas the non test results are gained from observation, interview and students’ journal. The technique of analysis data employed in the research refers to qualitative analysis proposed by Huberman. The technique of analysis is based on three main components namely data reduction, data display, and verification. Based on the research findings and discussion, it can be concluded that the contextual teaching and learning model can improve the students’ competence in reading of VIIIth grade students of SMP N 1 Karangdowo Klaten. It is demonstrated by the improvement in students’ passing level throughout the cycles undertaken. Students’ passing level improve starting from 55.0% on initial stage into 67.5% in Cycle I; 82.5% in Cycle II; and 95% in Cycle III. Students’ achievement in reading improves from initial stage up to Cycle III. The test results show that students’ comprehension on teaching material improve from stages to stages. Besides it can improve the students’ comprehension, the method employed in teaching may also improve the students’ motivation in attending the lesson. It is demonstrated from the students’ ability in practicing reading that improves from stages to stages.
