Abstract

The major problem of this study is to reveal the coping behavior of Luther Krank reflected in John Grisham’s Skipping Christmas. The objectives of the study are; to analyze the structural elements of the novel and to analyze the character of Luther Krank based on individual psychological analysis developed by Alfred Adler. This study belongs to qualitative study. In this method, there are two types of data sources, which are used, namely primary data and secondary data sources. The primary data source is the novel Skipping Christmas, meanwhile the secondary data source are the other sources related to the analysis such as internet, books and other references which are related to this study. In analyzing the data, she applies two approaches. Firstly, structural approach is used to analyze the elements of the novel. It consists of characterization, setting, point of view, plot, style, and theme. Secondly, the individual psychological approach is used to analyze the coping behavior of Luther Krank in facing life his problem from Christmas. The writer finds that the character of Luther Krank has some mental illnesses to face problem in the story, but he still tries to solve his problem hardly by himself. He has faced the problems that eventually endanger his life. He forgets that he has a lot of people to solve his problem easily. He becomes a person that has rational thinking and manages his act well in every problem he faced.
