Abstract

This major research problem of this study is how self-actualization is reflected on the major character’s personalities namely Robert Langdon. The object of the study is the novel Angels and Demons focusing on the major character. This novel is analysed on the bases of its structural elements and psychological perspective. In analyzing the psychological aspects, the researcher applies the theory of humanistic psychology proposed by Abraham Maslow. The data sources are divided into two,namely primary data and secondary data. The primary data source is the novel itself and the secondary data used are other materials relevant to the study. The method of data collecting is library and virtual research. The technique of data analysis is qualitative research. The result of the analysis shows the following conclusion. Firstly, the structural elements of the novel present a good unity. Dan Brown employs traditional plot that begins with exposition followed by complication, climax, and resolution. He takes struggle for achieving the goal of life as the theme of the novel. He employs participant of third person narrator point of view. He also uses the style in writing. Secondly, he describes how self-actualization is reflected on the major character’s personalities. He gives a moral message through this novel, that self-actualization is very important to our life. Humans will be motivated to attain his self-actualization after gratifying the lower needs (basic needs).
