Abstract

This study is with respect to William Shakespeare’s worldview in A Midsummer Night’s Dream original script. This research paper aims at analyzing original script of the play in terms of its structural elements and its socio-historical background in order to reveal William Shakespeare’s worldview based on Goldmann’s Genetic Structuralism theory. The writer uses qualitative method in this research paper. The type of study is descriptive qualitative research which analyzes certain essential connection between primary data source and secondary data source. The primary data source is original script of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Meanwhile, the secondary data sources are other sources that have relation to the primary data namely: the biography of William Shakespeare and the sources of sociological history of England. The result of this study shows that A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a product from contradictory process between Shakespeare’s perspective and the social aspects in his life time. This play is a synthesis of socio-historical aspects in Elizabethan age and the author’s worldview. The most important aspect that becomes spotlight in this play is culture. The special attention of it falls on marriage matter that is through it; Shakespeare had criticized conservative ideology that exists in his age. Marriage in Shakespeare’s perspective is a human beings right to choose their own destiny in accordance with nature whose highest purpose is to make life cycle go, so that the values of freedom and humanism can be achieved.
