Abstract

During the learning process of English, the students find some difficulties and tend to make errors. Most of them make errors on verbs. This study is aimed at (1) examining the type of English error by second year students based on the surface strategy taxonomy such as omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. (2) examining the sources of English errors by second year students based on sources of error such as interlingual transfer, intralingual transfer, and context of learning. In this research, the researcher used the qualitative research for analyzing the data. This research was carried out at SMP Negeri 6 Madiun, especially in class VIII D that consists of 40 students. To collect the data the researcher only used a test. The kind of test is changing verb pattern that consists of 20 items. The study shows that (1) there are types of errors: omission in the simple present tense (91 errors or 16. 34%), omission in the simple past tense (54 errors or 9. 69% of errors), addition in the simple present tense (82 errors or 14. 72%), addition in the simple past tense (71 errors or 12. 75% of errors), misformation in the simple present tense (105 errors or 18. 85% of errors), misformation in the simple past tense (164 errors or 29. 44% of errors). So, the dominant error is a misformation error with the frequency (269 errors or 48. 29% of errors).
