Abstract

Address systems are the words people used to designate the person they are talking to while they are talking to them. Its use depends on the relationship between addresser-addressee and the relative status of individual involved in conversation. This research studies the form and elements of politeness strategy of Javanese and English Address Systems. The data sources of the English Address System come from two fiction books of Left Behind and The Last Juror. The data sources of the Javanese Address System come from three manuscripts of Penyebar Semangat. There are Lintah Guling, Ndhepani Tlatah Sapecak, and Selir Ayu Dadi Dahuru from Penyebar Semangat. In collecting the data, the writer uses the observation method, which involves reading, signing, and making checklist. The main objectives of this research are to find the form of Javanese and English Address Systems and then are to describe and compare the elements of politeness strategy of the use of Javanese and English Address Systems. In clarifying the elements of politeness strategy, the writer used the hierarchical, solidarity and deference politeness strategies. After analyzing the data, there are some results found. The writer found that there are 11 English and 9 Javanese Address Systems in forms. There is no particular word to point her/himself (addresser) of A.S in ENG ‘I’ used the speech level while in JAV of A.S is characterized by the use of speech level, such as krama inggil’the most refined’, krama madya’refined’, ngoko’low’ levels. In English Address System, the first name always shows the intimacy address system. The most of the elements of politeness strategy in Javanese and English Address Systems construct the hierarchical politeness strategy. In addition, the elements of politeness strategy of both Javanese and English Address Systems are determined by the speaker’s social rank, such as wealth, hereditary, education, occupation, age, family and nobility.
