Abstract

Research Paper. Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. 2008. This study is aimed at describing three things. They are the implementation of teaching writing narrative genre using guided composition, the student’s response to the writing teaching-learning process, and the problems faced by the teacher. In achieving the objective, the researcher used case study as the approach to collect and analyze the data based on a single case. The research was held in SMP N 1 Gemolong. The researcher took 40 students of the second year student as the subject of the study. The writer gets the data of this research from event, informant, and document. The technique of collecting data is the observation and interview of writing teaching-learning process. The result of the analysis shows that guided composition technique is appropriate and quite effective for the second year student of SMP N 1 Gemolong teaching writing narrative genre. By using this technique, students are capable to write a composition easily. They are enthusiastic, interested, and motivated to take part in the classroom activities. They are not feeling bored and more entertained in the classroom, because the teacher used kinds of narrative text such as fable, tail, myth and also interesting pictures as the medium of teaching. The teacher has several problems in teaching namely difficulty in explaining the content of the English story, student’s difficulties in developing paragraph in a narrative genre, student’s difficulties in mastering component of writing, and lacking of teaching media.
