Abstract

This research paper elaborates the portraits of beliefs and values in Kurt Cobain’s lyrics of Nirvana’s songs, that are analyzed through sociological approach. The objectives of the research are to analyze the structural elements of the lyrics and to analyze the lyrics based on sociological perspective by identifying the relationship between the lyrics and the social background of American society in the late twentieth century. This research belongs to qualitative research. The data of the research is the text of Nirvana’s song lyrics consisting of three album, they are bleach, nevermind, and incesticide. Whereas the data source comes from both primary data source which is in the form of the text of the lyrics being researched and secondary data sources such as biography of the author, websites and other sources about the lyrics, the approach and the social background of American society that support the analysis. The method to analyze the data is descriptive analysis. Having analyzed the lyrics, the researcher comes to the conclusions as follows: Kurt Cobain’s lyrics of Nirvana’s songs contain the beliefs and values of the author. The lyrics imply that the readers should appreciate the norm, system of values, life style, and behavior reflected in beliefs and values in Cobain. Among other beliefs and values in Cobain’s lyrics are the norm, system of values, life style, and behavior reflected in the divorce, drugs, free sex, and suicide.
