Abstract

The research aims first, to describe the student’s mastery of primary verb at the second year of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. Second,to find out the most difficulties faced by the students in learning the primary verbs at the second year of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta. The method used by the writer is descriptive quantitative method. The research was done on 24th April until 19th May, 2007 of 40 students in SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Surakarta as the sample. The writer uses the test to collecting the data. The test used are multiple choice and completion test. The total questions are 30 items numbers. From the result of the test, the writer obtains the data to be analyzed. Then, the data are analyzed by using a descriptive analysis. The result of this research show that: First, 44% students’ correct answer for verb “be” belong to fair category, 30% students’ correct answer for verb “do” belong to poor category, and 43% students’ correct answer for verb “have” belong to fair category. The total of students’ correct answer for primary verb is 40% belong to poor category. Second, the most difficulties of primary verbs by the students are in verb “be” and verb “do”. Its percentage less 40% and belongs to poor category. Those percentages are lower than verb “have”
