Abstract

Self-medication is an efforts that is often done by someone to treat symptoms of a disease without consulting a doctor. Among the Indonesian people, the prevalence of self-medication tends to increase yearly to treat diseases or symptoms considered mild. However, the increase in the majority of self-medication practices in the community is different from the knowledge they have. Self-medication without sufficient knowledge can result in risks to patients, such as misdiagnosis, serious side effects, and drug abuse. This study aims to determine the number of people who practice self-medication, the level of knowledge, attitudes, and behavior of the community towards self-medication, and analyze the relationship between sociodemographic factors and the level of expertise, the relationship between the level of knowledge and attitudes, the relationship between the level of knowledge and behavior and the relationship between attitudes and behavior. This research was conducted using a cross-sectional method, and data collection was carried out through questionnaires that had been tested for validity and reliability, then distributed to the public. Sampling was done by accidental sampling. Respondents are residents of RW 03, Mijen Village, Kebonagung District, Demak Regency, aged 18-64 years, can read, and have self-medicated in the last six months and obtained respondents as many as 370 respondents. The Chi-Square test analyzes the relationship between knowledge level and gender, and occupation. Spearman's rank test to investigate the relationship between knowledge level and age, last education, income, distance from home to health services, the relationship between knowledge level and attitude and behavior, and the relationship between philosophy and community self-medication behavior. In this study, the results showed that the level of public knowledge was sufficient (71.1%), attitudes towards self-medication were adequate (56.5%), and behavior towards self-medication was relatively good (74.6%). There is a relationship between the level of knowledge and recent education, employment, income, and distance from home to health services, as evidenced by the p values, respectively, of 0.002; 0.004; 0.004; 0.000, and there is a relationship between education level and attitudes and behavior and attitudes with self-medication behavior in the community with a p-value of 0.000.
