Abstract

Secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.) can be used as a sunscreen agent because it contains phytochemical compounds such as flavonoids, phenolics, tannins, alkaloids, and triterpenoids. The potency of sappan wood extract can be formulated into a gel preparation. The gelling agents used in this study were Carbopol 940 with a concentration of 0.5-1.5% and HPMC with a concentration of 3-4%. Carbopol is a gelling agent that is safe and has good adhesion, while HPMC can form clear gels, has good microbial resistance, and is stable in long-term storage. The use of a combination of gelling agents Carbopol and HPMC to produce a gel that is physically better and more stable in long-term storage. This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of Carbopol 940 and HPMC in sappan wood extract sunscreen gel based on its physical evaluation and to determine the activity of Sun Protection Factor (SPF) in sappan wood extract sunscreen gel. This research was conducted by making 5 draft formulas using variations of Carbopol 940 and HPMC respectively 1%:3.5%, 1.5%:3%, 1.25%:3.25%, 0.75%:3 .75%, and 0.5%:4%. Optimization was carried out using Design Expert software with the D-Optimal method and the responses used were viscosity, pH, adhesion, and spreadability. The prediction of the optimum formula obtained is verified by comparing the verification results with the predicted results. The optimum gel formula contains 0.5% Carbopol 940 and 4% HPMC with a desirability value of 0.801. The prediction and verification test results were analyzed using ANOVA statistics showing no significant difference (p-value > 0.05). The optimum formula for sunscreen gel was tested for Sun Protection Factor (SPF) activity in vitro. Sunscreen gel with a concentration of 0.12% secang wood extract did not show any sunscreen activity with an SPF value of 1.22. An SPF value of less than 2 is considered to have no ability to protect the skin from UV rays.
