Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by increased blood glucose levels caused by decreased insulin production or decreased insulin receptor sensitivity or both. Diabetes mellitus is a degenerative disease that requires long-term treatment, so traditional medicine is now an alternative to treat this disease. One plant that is believed to treat diabetes is ginger. Ginger contains gingerol and when ginger is heated it causes some gingerol compounds to turn into shogaol. The shogaol compound is thought to cause an increase in adiponectin expression and a decrease in TNF (Tumor Necrosis Factor) secretion, resulting in an increase in insulin receptor sensitivity and a decrease in insulin resistance which causes a decrease in blood sugar levels. This study aims to obtain scientific data on the antidiabetic effect of red ginger n-hexane extract on alloxan-induced Wistar rats. This study used the pre and post test method with control group design using 18 Wistar rats which were randomly divided into 6 groups, namely normal control, negative control, positive control (glibenclamide) and red ginger n-hexane extract treatment group 80, 200, and 500 mg/kgBW. The blood sugar levels of the rats were measured using a visible spectrophotometer with a wavelength of 546 nm on the 0th, 7th, 14th and 21st days. The results obtained were administration of red ginger n-hexane extract at doses of 80, 200, and 500 mg/kgBW can reduce blood sugar levels with a p value <0.05 compared to negative controls.
