Abstract

This study aims to clarify whether or not the types of texts and reading texts in the textbook entitled Let’s Talk for SMP are suitable with those required in the School-based Curriculum and facilitate the students to achieve the reading competencies. The writer employs descriptive qualitative method, and the data in this research are reading texts of English textbook entitled Let’s Talk. In this research paper, the writer identified the reading texts in the textbook and then compared the types of reading texts in the textbook with those in the School-based Curriculum. Based on the analysis, the writer finds that all the textbook contains of four types of texts as suggested by the School-based Curriculum: recount text, descriptive text, and narrative text. The contents of all types of texts in the textbook are good, because they have fulfilled the indicators in the School-based Curriculum. The content of the book has percentage of compatibility 100 % for the reading texts material. Based on the percentage, referring to schema of quality classification proposed by Suharsimi (1993), it is concluded that the quality of reading text material in the textbook is very good in developing reading skill as demanded by the School-based Curriculum. In other words; the reading text materials in the textbook facilitate the students to achieve the competencies. The writer concludes that the English textbook entitled Let’s Talk for SMP 1 can be used by the English teachers to teach reading to the first year students of Junior High School. Because Let’s Talk textbook is an appropriate textbook to guide the teaching learning process. Let’s Talk textbook is a good quality textbook which provides and supports the material needed. Teacher can build and develop their communicative competence better by using this book.
