Abstract

Based on the first observation (Pre-Action Research), the student still had limited listening skill and difficulties to learn listening. The students’ attention to learn English was decreasing and the teacher has difficulty in classroom management. The effect of the problems concretely could be seen from the low achievement of the students in either daily test or final test. The research is aimed to investigate whether or not the students have adequate listening skill in learning English, to improve the students’ listening skill using storytelling technique, and to describe to what extends storytelling can improve the students’ listening skill. In this research, storytelling is used to increase students’ listening skill in learning English. This research was carried out at SMPN 2 Kartasura especially in class VIII D that consists of 38 students. In collecting the required data, the writer did observation (Classroom Action Research), test, and interview. There were two cycles in this classroom action research. In which, each cycle are divided to four procedures namely; planning, acting, observing and reflecting and consists of two meetings. The results of pre-test and posttest were used to know the improvement of the students’ listening skill. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the process of teaching listening using storytelling is to improve the students’ listening skill and to motivate the students to be active in the classroom. The mean score of pre-test was 61.84. That belongs to low score. While, the mean score of the students’ listening skill of the teacher did the action was 90.26. The students’ score was getting better in each cycle. It indicates that the students’ listening skill was improved. The writer realizes that every work has problems or obstacles. Based on the classroom action research, some problems faced by teacher appear when she taught listening using storytelling, the teacher has problems in managing the time, controlling the class and also the capability of the students. However the problems can be solved immediately. To solve the problems faced by the students, teacher can do some ways, provided students with the background knowledge necessary for their comprehension of the listening passage or activates the existing knowledge that the students possess, narrated the story with best storytelling technique, and also explained the strange vocabularies to the students to increase the learners’ vocabulary. Therefore, it is better for the students to study English carefully through practice and experience, and to be active and creative in learning English.
