Abstract

The current Nganjuk Regency is the only regency in East Java Province that is in the top five largest national red onion producers, ranking second (32.7%) after Brebes Regency (38.9 Ha). In addition, Nganjuk Regency is one of the targets of the East Java provincial government in improving the economic wheel through the industrial sector. The purpose of this study is (1) to analyze the red onion base and non-base sectors for each sub-district in Nganjuk Regency, (2) to analyze the spatial picture of the red onion sector in the development of the KING industry in Nganjuk Regency, and (3) to analyze the growth of the red onion sector in the development of the KING industry in Nganjuk Regency. This study uses secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and the Nganjuk Regency Agriculture Office. The data processing uses economic calculations, namely (1) Location Quotient calculation (LQ), (2) Dynamic Location Quotient (DLQ), and (3) growth analysis during the development of KING with the help of red onion production data from 2016 to 2020 and spatial modeling (GIS), which is map visualization. The results of the study show that there are six sub-districts that are superior in red onion growth (base and have potential for development), namely Rejoso Sub-district, Bagor Sub-district, Gondang Sub-district, Sukomoro Sub-district, Wilangan Sub-district, and Nganjuk Sub-district. These six sub-districts, together with 10 other sub-districts, are designated as industrial areas, which can be seen as a functional space imbalance. This should be focused on the 10 sub-districts and 1 sub-district (not KING area and not natural tourist area) as an industrial area. In this case, it cannot be assessed that the industry has a significant impact on the sustainability of red onion production because the industry is still in the development stage (not 5 years or 10 years in operation). This shows that there are many factors that affect red onion production growth besides the industry, including weather/climate, soil conditions, and pest outbreaks. As proven in this research analysis, about 10% of the industry has the potential to influence the sustainability of red onion production.
