Abstract

The objective of the research was: to present the teachers’ teaching strategy for speaking, to provide an overview of how the techniques were put into practice when teaching and to describe the difficulties the teacher encountered while attempting to teaching speaking during COVID19 pandemic at SMA Al Firdaus Surakarta. The type of the research was descriptive qualitative. The subject choosen is definitely an English teacher because the researcher will analyze the teacher’s method of teaching English here. Riana Oktavia, S.Pd. an English instructor at SMA Al Firdaus Surakarta, is the study subject.The data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. Findings show that The techniques include: 1) synchronous and asynchronous learning; 2) using online media platforms to support teaching and learning such as Moodle, WhatsApp, YouTube and Zoom; and 3) role playing. The techniques can be put into action in three steps: 1) pre activity, 2) main activity, and 3) post activity. Three issues are present: 1) low student interest; 2) issues with internet access; and 3) less interaction between students and teachers.
