Abstract

The history of the sugar industry in Indonesia in the 17th century the Netherlands opened sugarcane plantations as monoculture plants. The success of the sugar industry in the colonial period was supported by the large number of factories built. One of those built in Java is the Jatibarang Sugar Factory which was established in 1842 by the Netherlands government and part of the Commodity Culturstelsel program. The factory that has a locomotive station that there are only two in the world and the engines are still complete today. However, the condition of the building is quite poor and abandoned because it has not been operating since 2017. The existence of the Jatibarang Sugar Factory has a lot of potential that has also taken part in the history and values of traditions in Jatibarang related to sugar factories such as the "metikan" tradition and the tradition of "nganten tebu or manten tebu". In the present situation, these values will fade over time due to the condition of the factory that has been abandoned and no longer operating. Based on the problems and potential of the Jatibarang Sugar Factory as an educational tourist destination with the concept of living heritage. The emphasis on living heritage focuses on the memory of past lifestyles through values and aspects of the past. The emphasis includes architectural aspects, historical aspects, sociocultural aspects, and economic aspects by implementing a strategy of revitalizing buildings that still exist in the Jatibarang Sugar Factory. The development concept can increase educational tourism and improve the economy in the Jatibarang District area.
