Abstract

Bad oral habits that are often found and considered normal by the community, one of which is bruxism. Bruxism is defined as parafunctional grinding of the teeth, unconscious habits, and repetition. The prevalence of sleep bruxism is estimated at 16.5% while the prevalence of awake bruxism in the general population is estimated to be 5.0%, and both male and female forms of bruxism are the same. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of the use of occlusal splints in reducing bruxism habits. Reducing the habit of bruxism can use an occlusal splint which acts as a stress reliever and relieves excessive pressure and temporomandibular joint deformities and disorders due to bruxism and protects the teeth from traumatic forces in maintaining the maxillary mandible relationship in the right position. Methods: This research is a literature review, using secondary data obtained through several e-database, PubMed, Scienedirect, and Google Scholar based on keywords and a predetermined time span. The results obtained were 1487 articles from all e-databases which were then filtered and three articles were analyzed in a narrative manner. Discussion: Three articles were obtained that reported the role of the occlusal splint in reducing signs and symptoms of habitual bruxism which could be seen in the decrease in nocturnal bruxism activity of the temporalis muscle, length and duration of the masseter muscle, thickness of the right anterior digastric muscle, deformity of the jawbone and tension of the mandibular condyle. Conclusion: The effectiveness of the occlusal splint in patients with bruxism was characterized by decreased temporal muscle nocturnal bruxism activity, length and duration of masseter muscle, right anterior digastric muscle thickness, jawbone deformity and mandibular condyle tension.
