Abstract

This study aims to explain the forms of code mixing in the language of teachers and students that occur during the learning process, the factors that cause the occurrence of these language acts, and the function of code mixing in improving students' verbal abilities. This research use desciptive qualitative approach. The research was conducted at MTS Ibnu Mubaarok Karanganyar. The object of this research is the speech of teachers and students that contain code mixing during the learning process. The data in this study are written data in the form of text, notes, and recordings. Sources of data in this study are teachers and students who do code mixing and are involved in the learning process. The data collection techniques used in this study were the listening-engagement technique and the Listening-Free-Libat-Cakap (SBLC) technique. The data analysis method used in this study is the intralingual equivalent method and the extralingual equivalent method. Research on code mixing has been done at the time of the learning process, but only a few have analyzed its function in improving students' verbal abilities. The results of this study are the form of code mixing used by teachers and students during the learning process at MTS Ibnu Mubaarok Karanganayar can be grouped into 2 forms, namely (1) based on the type of language used including code mixing between Indonesian-Javanese, Indonesian -Arabic, and mix code between Indonesian-English. (2) The form of code mixing based on linguistic form includes, code mixing in the form of word insertion and code mixing in the form of phrases. Factors that influence the occurrence of code mixing in the learning process are habit factors, vocabulary mastery, age factor, bilingualism, Arabic language skills, and language politeness factors. The function of code mixing in improving students' abilities is to increase vocabulary, equality, and sentence insertion.
