Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe Kafka's mental state, the struggle reflected in Kafka's character, and describe the influence of his alter ego in Kafka's life on the novel Kafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami published in 2005. This novel tells the story of a boy who is looking for his mother and sister with an his alter ego. This research is a qualitative descriptive study using a psychoanalytic approach by Sigmund Freud. The prime data source of this study is the novel Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. While secondary data are taken from books, articles, and literature related to the research. Data collection techniques are carried out by reading the novel Kafka on the shore, classification, and analyzing data. The result of this study is the mental state of the Kafka figures who are grouped into Id, Ego, and Superego. The id of the Kafka character is looking for his mother and older sister, and Kafka's ego makes Kafka have to leave the house in fifteen years old, and the superego of the Kafka character is his alter ego that helps Kafka to show reality when leaving the house. While the struggle depicted in the Kafka figure is that Kafka only gets unclear information and the Kafka figure can only be stuck in his thinking. Researchers also found the influence of alter ego on Kafka's character, alter ego influenced Kafka's character to be wiser and also made Kafka accept the circumstances of his mother leaving him.
