Abstract

Tofu industry is a business that was established in the context of developing activities in the food sector that have positive and negative impacts on the environment. The positive impact is in the form of fulfilling the community's need for food sources, while the negative impact of the tofu industry is in the form of waste disposal that causes pollution problems that damage the environment. The environmental pollution is in the form of solid waste disposal (tofu dregs) and liquid waste. This research was conducted to determine the effect of rice husk and activated carbon in decreasing Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) in liquid tofu waste by absorption method. The procedure is carried out through several stages, namely the manufacture of adsorbents by purification of rice husk silica ash, manufacture of activated carbon. The analysis was carried out by calculating BOD levels before treatment. Thus, the following results were obtained. Before treatment, both samples obtained BOD levels of 2380.8 mg/L and decreased respectively for the first and second tests, namely 1190.4 mg/L and 1180.5 mg/L (rice husk) and 1587,2 mg/L. L and 1510.8 mg/L (activated carbon). The effectiveness of rice husk and activated carbon has a significant effect on reducing BOD levels in tofu liquid waste with a probability value of less than 0.05.
