Abstract

Introductions : The incidence of dysmenorrhea according to WHO in 2017 was found to be 1,769,425 people (90%) experiencing dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea is a problem that is often found in adolescent girls that can affect the quality of life and daily activities. One of the factors that can cause dysmenorrhea is a lack of iron intake. Iron intake that is less than the daily recommendation affects the formation of hemoglobin resulting in less oxygen supply in body tissues and causes tissue ischemia, causing dysmenorrhea. Objectives : To analyze the relationship between iron intake and the level of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls at SMK N 1 Jenar, Sragen Regency. Methods : This research was observational with cross-sectional study design with a population of 218 adolescent girls. Sampling using simple random sampling method and produced 59 samples. Data retrieval of iron intake by direct interview method using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ) form for the last 3 months and data on the level of dysmenorrhea using wong-baker questionnaire. Statistical analysis using Rank Spearman test. Results : The iron intake of most of the adolescent girls was in the low category (81.4%) and the level of dysmenorrhea which had no pain was 13.6%, slightly painful 27.1%, slightly more painful 18.6%, pain 23.7%, more pain 13.6% and very painful 3.4%. The results of the Spearman Rank test showed that there was a relationship between iron intake and the level of dysmenorrhea (p = 0.001). Conclusion : There is a relationship between iron intake and the level of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls.
