Abstract

Introduction : Hypertension is one of the diseases with the number of patients increasing every year in Indonesia. The prevalence of hypertension in 2013 was 25.8% and increased to 34.11% in 2018. Hypertension occurs due to an increase in Reactive Oxidative Species (ROS) associated with oxidative stress. Hypertension can increase urea levels because kidney function decreases in excreting urea. Propolis extract contains Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester (CAPE) which functions to inhibit the occurrence of oxidative stress so that it can reduce serum urea levels. Objectives : To know the effect of giving propolis extract to male rats with wistar albino strain of hypertension model. Methodology : The method used is true experimental design with pre test and post test control group design. The treatment in this study used propolis extract with the trademark PropoelixTM. The number of samples used were 28 male wistar albino rats which were divided into 4 groups, namely the nonhypertensive group (K1), the hypertension group (K2), the PropoelixTM treatment group at a dose of 0.0216 g/200gBW/day (K3) and the PropoelixTM treatment group at a dose of 0.0216 g/200gBW/day (K3). 0.0432 g/200gBW/day (K4). PropoelixTM was administered for 21 days. Measurement of urea levels using the enzymatic method. The measurement results were analyzed by the Kruskal Wallis test and the Mann Whitney test. Results : The administration of propolis extract had a significant effect (p<0.01) in reducing serum urea levels. The decrease in serum urea levels in K3 was 22,29 mg/dl and K4 was 25,58 mg/dl. Conclusion : Administration of propolis extract at a dose of 0.0432 g/200 g BW/day was more effective in reducing urea levels in rats than propolis extract at a dose of 0.0216 g/200 g BW/day.
