Abstract

Background: Prevalence of stunting in Indonesia reached 30,8% in 2018. The prevalence of stunting in Bulakrejo reached 18,27% and is the highest prevalence among Sukoharjo District. Maternal education level indirectly related to supporting the child’s nutritional status. Meanwhile, protein played an important role in child’s growth and development. Objective: This study aimed to determine the correlation between maternal education level and protein intake in children aged 24-60 months to the incidence of stunting in Bulakrejo, Sukoharjo Regency. Method: This study used an observational and cross-sectional design. Maternal education level was obtained by interview whilst the child’s protein intake was obtained using Semi Quantitative-Food Frequency Questionnaire. Chi Square Test was conducted to determine the correlation between maternal education level to the incidence of stunting. Meanwhile, the correlation between child’s protein intake to the incidence of stunting was analyzed using the Fisher’s Exact Test. Results: This study shows that children with stunting was more common in the group of mothers with low education level (67,9%) and in the group of children with less protein intake (66,7%). The percentage of mothers with high education level was 62,2%. The percentage of children with adequate protein intake reached 91,9%. The average protein intake of stunting children was 33,31 grams, while the average protein intake of non-stunting children was 36,65 grams. There was a correlation or different proportion between maternal education level and the incidence of stunting (p=0,017). Meanwhile, there was no correlation nor different proportion between children’s protein intake and the incidence of stunting (p=0,674). Conclusion: Maternal education level related to the incidence of stunting. Therefore, maternal education needs to be prioritized and supported by various parties. Providing animal-sourced protein and plant-sourced protein for children must be well-balanced to optimize children’s growth and development.
