Abstract

Masjid Gedhe Kauman Yogyakarta as one of the complete elements of the Yogyakarta Sultanate has succeeded in attracting people to make it a center of worship and Islamic culture. This is evidenced by the lively worship activities held in the mosque building as well as religious and cultural ceremonies centered in the mosque's courtyard. The function of the center of worship and Islamic culture needs to be preserved so that religious and cultural values can remain attached to society in every era. The form of preservation is by modernizing so that the function of space in the Gedhe Mosque area and its surroundings can be used more relevantly to the conditions of the times. The indicators of modernization in this design are technological progress, economic progress, political stability, progress in social organization, and the involvement of cultural values in modernization. The design is carried out with an environmental and behavioral architectural approach with the intention that the resulting design product can accommodate people's behavior in the era of modernization. Modernization is translated into several aspects, namely technological progress, social organization, economic progress, and political stability which must always go hand in hand with the culture and traditions of the surrounding community. The description of modernization is realized through the general design of the Kauman area and seven design locations are tailored to the needs of the Rental Parking Building & Culinary Center, Digital Studio, Homestay, North Communal Park, East Communal Park, South Communal Park, and Craft Shop & Bureau Advertising.
