Abstract

The objectives of this research were to find out the type of lexical ambiguity used, to identify the type of surface structure ambiguity used, to classify the type of deep structure ambiguity used, to describe which type of ambiguity is dominant, and to explain how to disambiguate the ambiguous sentences. This research used descriptive qualitative research with content analysis method. The data were sentences containing ambiguity in the Alice in Wonderland movie script, collected by using document analysis. The data were analyzed using the theory proposed by Kess (2016), Murphy (2010) and Kreidler (2017). This study used the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana theory (2014) for data validity. The results showed that (1) there are three sub types of ambiguity, namely homonymy, polysemy, and a head with inner and outer modifiers, (2) the most dominant type of ambiguity is polysemy with 27 utterances or 57%, (3) parsing, reverse realization, and logical form rewrites were used to disambiguate the ambiguous sentences. It was concluded that people need good understanding in English to comprehend the language in the movie.
