Abstract
Environmental management in the form of forest resources, especially protected forests, cannot be separated from the participation of the people who live in the vicinity so that the protected forest area functions and its sustainability is maintained. The area of protected forest in Tawangmanggu District, Karanganyar Regency is 2534.1 Ha. The purpose of this study is to analyze the socio-economic characteristics and the level of community participation in the management of protected forest areas in Tawangmangu District and to analyze the factors that influence the level of community participation in the management of protected forest areas. The method used in this study is the interview method using an interview sheet. Sampling by purposive sampling method with the population is the community around the protected forest area of 300 people then obtained as many as 75 samples spread over six villages. Collecting data through observation, interviews, and documentation. Using quantitative descriptive data analysis method. 1) The results of the study are tabulated tables which show that the socio-economic characteristics of the community around the protected forest area include productive age, while the last formal education is elementary school of 62.67%, as many as 56% are farmers, dominated by monthly income of around Rp. 1,000. 000-Rp 2,000,000, the community has lived for more than 30 years, and the average forest land management is 0.1-0.5 Ha. 2) The result is in the form of a classification table for the level of participation, namely the high level of community participation (62.67%) which means following all stages of participation, namely planning, implementation, receiving benefits, monitoring and evaluation. However, there are still people with a moderate level of community participation (22.67%) which means following three stages of participation, namely implementation, benefit acceptance, monitoring and evaluation. Then the level of community participation is low (14.66%) which means that it follows 2 stages of participation, namely receiving benefits, monitoring and evaluating in the management of protected forest areas in Tawangmangu District. 3) The next result is a table for calculating the internal factors affecting the level of community participation in the management of protected forest areas, namely age, type of work, length of stay, and experience in groups. Then the external factors that affect the level of community participation are stakeholder involvement and institutions affect the level of community participation.
