Abstract

Introduction : The prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia is high and continues to increase. Low potassium levels can occur due to prolonged hypertension which can affect the rate of principal cells in secreting potassium. Low potassium levels in the long term can cause renal hypertension and trigger kidney disease, heart disease, and stroke. Propolis extract contains antioxidants that can overcome oxidative stress by reducing levels of Reactive Oxygen Species so that it can improve conditions of hypertension and hypokalemia. Objectives : To determine the effect of propolis extract on blood potassium levels in male rats with wistar albino strain of hypertension model. Methodology : This study uses a true experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The treatment in this study used a propolis extract called PropoelixTM which has the highest antioxidant content in the world with an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value of up to 21,921. The sample of this study were 28 wistar albino rats that met the inclusion criteria and were divided into 4 groups, non-hypertensive group (K1), hypertension group (K2), treatment group 1 (K3) given PropoelixTM dose of 0.0216 g/200 g body weight of rats and treatment group 2 (K4) was given PropoelixTM at a dose of 0.0432 g/200 g of body weight of rats for 21 days. Measurement of potassium levels using the Ion Selective Electrode (ISE) method and systolic blood pressure using the tail-cuff auto-pickup method. Data analysis used the Kruskall Wallis test followed by the Mann Whitney test. Results : The administration of propolis extract in this study had a significant effect on reducing blood potassium levels in rats with a p value of 0.000. Propolis extract at a dose of 0.0216 g/200 g BW decreased blood potassium levels by 17.18% while at a dose of 0.0432 g/200 g BW it decreased by 30.36%. Conclusion : Administration of propolis extract with a dose of 0.0216g/200g of body weight of rats and a dose of 0.0432 g/200g of body weight of rats had an effect on lowering blood potassium levels in male rats with wistar albino strain of hypertension model. In future research, it is recommended to carry out serial measurements in order to determine when changes in blood potassium levels occur.
