Abstract

Introduction : Hypoalbuminemia is an indicator of complications of renal hypertension. Hypoalbuminemia causes liver failure, inflammation, and chronic malnutrition. The process of hypertension is due to oxidative stress which can be triggered by the administration of prednisone and NaCl. Propolis extract can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory compounds and Reactive Oxygen Species. Objective : To determine the effect of propolis extract on plasma albumin levels in male rats with a hypertension model of wistar albino strain. Methodology : This study is a true experimental design with a pretest post-test control group design using 28 male rats of wistar albino strain. The rats were divided into 4 groups, namely the non-hypertensive group (feed AD II and aquadestilata), the hypertensive group (prednisone 1.5 mg/kg BW rats and NaCL 8%), treatment group 1 (propolis extract 0.0216 g/200 g BW rats). ), and treatment group 2 (propolis extract 0.0432 g/200 g BW rats). The propolis extract used is a PropoelixTM product with an Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) value of 21,921. Measurement of plasma albumin levels using the colorimetric test method and systolic blood pressure using the tail-cuff auto-pickup method. Data analysis using One-Way Anova test followed by post Hoc Tukey HSD test. Results : The results showed that propolis extract had an effect on increasing plasma albumin levels in rats with a p value of 0.000 (<0.01). Propolis extract at a dose of 0.0216 g/200 g BW increased plasma albumin by 1.8 g/dl, while propolis extract at a dose of 0.0432 g/200 g BW increased by 2.55 g/dl. Conclusion : Propolis extract at a dose of 0.0432 g/200 g BW had a greater effect on increasing plasma albumin levels in rats. It is recommended that measurements in future studies be carried out serially so that the time of the increase in plasma albumin can be known.
