Abstract

Fangirling is a behavior carried out by female fans (fangirls) to show their admiration or liking for someone or something they idolize. K-Pop culture is currently expanding, both in Indonesia and throughout the world. The spread of K-Pop culture cannot be separated from the role of the media, especially social media as a forum for disseminating information. The student is one of the many K-Pop fans who also often do fangirling. This study aims to find out how the phenomenon of fangirling is carried out by female students, especially at UMS Communication Science students who like K-Pop. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. Henry Jenkins' fan theory was chosen as the theory used in this research. Data collection was done by interviewing UMS Communication Science students who like K-Pop. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in the use of social media as a medium for fangirling on UMS Communication Science students during the pandemic, which makes some of the respondents considered as active fans, marked by the frequent seeking of information about their idols on social media and creating content then upload it on social media.
