Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the perceptions and problems faced by third-semester students of Department of English Education in Argumentative Speaking by using OpenLearning at Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This research used a qualitative descriptive method with a phenomenological approach. Data collection techniques in this research used interview techniques with semi-structured methods. The subjects in this research were four third-semester students from class H DEE UMS 2020 who had joined Argumentative Speaking subject. The object of this research is the perception and problems faced by students based on their experiences while learning Argumentative Speaking using OpenLearning. The data analysis technique used is hermeneutic phenomenology. The results showed that: 1) OpenLearning requires a steady Internet bandwidth Connectivity; 2) OpenLearning is monotonous with a video repository only; 3) Teacher has basic skill in operating OpenLearning; 4) OpenLearning is encouraging students to work on their progress.
